Why is Branding so Important
Branding is especially important in the drop shipping business because, the probability of someone else selling the same product as you, is very high. Many of you will find credible suppliers on AliExpress or Oberlo. For this reason, you’ll want to set yourself apart from your competition.
Another reason to start with a good branding strategy is to give yourself leverage to compete against the big box competition like Amazon and Walmart.
Before we do any of those things, we have to know more about your customers. But, you don’t have any customers yet, right? No worries, I’m going to show you how to find people that look like your customers. We can do this by searching for hashtags relevant to your niche.
Why Drop Shipping
In case you’re new to drop shipping, this is one of the easiest ways to start a business. Dropshipping eliminates the hassle of holding inventory so you don’t have to worry about shelf space or costly merchandise. Instead, your supplier will ship your product directly to the customer once they place an order on your store.
The dropshipping system allows you to sell products all over the world. This has the potential to become a very lucrative business if you follow my strategy to branding your store and commit yourself to constant learning.

How do You Start Branding Your Drop Shipping Business?
Okay, so now you’re probably wondering how to start branding your business. I know there are plenty of chapters on this topic in your college business courses teaching you guys the educated ways of building a brand, but I’m going to show you the quickest, most effective way to start branding your business.
When you are just starting a business, you might not know what, or who, your customers are. Right? But the truth is, you do know what your customers look like, you just need help identifying them. Instagram is an excellent source for identifying your customers. Here, you can find out what their personalities and styles are.
This next section will introduce you to buzz words, what are they, how to find them, and how to incorporate them into your business. Now let’s get ready to build an entire brand around a single niche. First, compile a list of buzz words to help identify words associated with the feelings you want to express with your brand.
1) What are Buzz Words
Buzz words are words that you can find on popular social media accounts. Usually, these words are hashtags. Now think about how you can use these popular hashtags to brand your business. I want you to focus on this when building your brand. But… you’re not going to use these buzz words in your brand’s name, you’re just using them to create a list of words that will describe what you are selling.
Here is what I mean.
Start searching Instagram for relevant influencers so you can get an idea of their personalities and vibes. You want to focus on the ones that are using your products or products that are similar to the ones you offer in your store. So if you are selling something in the fashion niche, then look for relevant Instagrammers who are wearing something within that same niche. You can do this by using hashtags in your search. For example: #womensfashion or #mensfashion.
Keep narrowing down your search until you find your specific niches, like women’s sports jackets or men’s athletic jackets. Once you do this, you can start scrolling through the popular post. You’re probably wondering what you should do next. Just start paying attention to the captions or descriptions to the post about the pictures.
Let’s use women’s fashion niche as an example. You’ve already searched for relevant Instagramers, and now you are scrolling through the top post. You just came across someone wearing a color block dress complimented with a flattering denim jacket. Read the caption to this post and look for adjectives that you can pull out as buzz words. You’ll probably find words like “bold”, “confident”, “rich”, “sexy” or “creative”. Add this to your list of buzz words.
You can also look at the images and come up with your own buzz words by identifying how the look makes you feel. What emotion does this photo evoke? Then add these to your list as well. Once you have about 5-8 words on your list, you’re ready to start thinking about your business name.
(FYI: emoji’s are also a good use of buzz words).
2) Find an Attention-Grabbing Business Name
Some new entrepreneurs will start their business with a generic name. This technique is okay if you have experience buts if you are just starting out, I recommend using a name that will help shoppers identify what you are selling. Now that you’re ready to generate a name let’s define some basic rules.
- Pick a name related to what you offer in your store.
- Use the buzz words to find powerful words to include in your name.
- Find a name that is available as a “.com.”
Finding a domain can be a tricky task because you’ll want to be sure it is available as a “.com”; as well as, social media networks. Shopify has a useful set of resources that will help you do this. Use this source to build a list of 100 dynamic business names around your niche. The page will look something like this.
Use the search box to generate a list of names to get some ideas. This is the time to think about your buzz words. Since I used an example for women jackets above, I’ll stick with the same thing for this step. Now looking over my list, I would try to see if any of these names jump out as an indication to another name in my list. In other words, find names that carry the same emotion as the list of buzz words.
Notice the names highlighted in the red boxes. The word “Prolific” makes me think of rich, abundant, luxuriant.
When I see the word “GoldRush”, I think of a race to the gold or the jackpot. You can play with this tool to brainstorm several ideas. When I find something I like, I qualify it through namecheck.com. This will tell me if the name is available as a “.com” and if it is available on various social media platforms; such as Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram and more.
Next up, finding a logo for your brand.
3) How to Create a Logo
Remember earlier when I said that Shopify has a useful set of resources? Well, here is another one and another reason why I like Shopify. This is the easiest logo making tool out there. You don’t have to be a graphic designer to have a nice looking logo.
This tool is the best choice for entrepreneurs because it is fast, professional and delivered to your inbox. Your delivery will include optimized formats for different uses; like transparent background, Facebook profiles, business cards and more.
Hundreds of templates help you connect with your audience. They even have an app you can download to take your ideas on the go. Once you click the “GET STARTED” button, you will land on a screen that asks for your business space. Some options are fashion, health & beauty, home & garden, food & drink and a few more. Choose one and then hit the “NEXT” button at the bottom of the screen.
The next screen will ask you to choose your style. You can think about your buzz words here. You can select up to three, so for our example, I’ll select bold, creative, and modern. Then, it will populate hundreds of designs to choose from.
Next, select a design. You can always go back and change your design if you are not happy with it.
Once you select a design the next step is to customize your designs. Most of the designs have different options to choose from, such as; fonts, colors, layout, and icons. I decided on the above design for Prolific Jackets because it is modern, feminine and simple. As you can see, branding your drop shipping business is easy once you have a strategy.
Once you have a name and a face for your store, you can start building your eCommerce and social media sites immediately. This branding strategy is an easy way to get your store up and running with little to no experience.
